The RS409 is Symbol Technology's latest laser-based data capture wearable scanner, often referred to as the ring
scanner. This ring scanner is used in conjunction with the WT4000 wearable mobile computer. This data capture
system is used in scan-intensive environments where hands-free operation greatly increases productivity.
The RS409 is typically used in warehouse environments often exposed to high temperatures and humid operating
conditions. During a typical 8-hour shift, the ring sustains repeated impacts from boxes, conveyors and walls.
Being worn on left and right fingers demands high ergonomic considerations. A compact-but-durable design
was required.
Kaleidoscope project managed team resources to ensure a tight delivery schedule and seamless integration with
the Symbol internal development team, as well as integration with the wearable mobile computer. This disciplined
approach insured an on-time and on-budget solution.
Kaleidoscope's deeply experienced engineering team worked closely with Symbol's internal Industrial Design team to
develop a unique, highly ergonomic rotating head design that accommodates right and left handed usage with no
compromises. The housing employs innovative sealed interfaces and a reliable, protected contact scheme. The result
is a highly rugged and sealed design that quickly passed all of Symbol's stringent evaluation and test criteria.
The rotating scan head provided an innovative solution to the problem of left and right handed ergonomics.
The RS409 wearable ring scanner brings a new level of durability and ergonomics to this product class. In addition,
the product rejuvenates a unique class of devices in the Symbol product line.
